New Art: "Tiger Tide"
New art for the new year! I've been through a bad case of artist's block for most of 2017, and, knock on wood, I am finally coming back to life!
This piece was inspired by a dear friend of mine. Here we have the majestic tiger shark, Galeocerdo cuvier, with all of her powerful energy radiating from every flick of her fins. This is a watercolor and ink piece. I mixed my paint with rain water, and finely detailed with itsy bitsy brushes. This painting has extra special sparkle - it is adorned with pieces of sea treasure that I have carried with me for half my life; chips of a very old crumbling abalone shell. This shell had been buried for a very long time, and I found it sticking out of a cliffside after a rainstorm in my native home of Southern California.
My animal subject in this piece is an apex predator of the ocean, inhabiting tropical and temperate seas. Tiger sharks are not picky eaters, and when hungry will consume just about anything that seems reasonable to them. (Includes a wide array of other marine life and famously; license plates, oil cans, tires, and other junk that should not be in the sea.)
Conservation:
Despite being an apex predator, tiger sharks join the rest of the world's declining shark population in facing the worst danger on the seas: humans. The world's sharks are targeted and killed for their fins, meat, and many shark products. Sharks are typically long-lived, slow growing, and slow to reproduce. Humans are killing sharks at alarmingly wasteful and unsustainable rates. Without sharks, ecosystems in the ocean collapse. Without healthy oceans, life as we know it will collapse. We do not need shark products.

PS, quahog clam shells - which are all over the place on the inshore banks of the Treasure Coast - make excellent paint dishes. (A great alternative to the common plastic art supplies, woo!)
